Adaptive rice varietiesAbstract
Rice farming in Tanasitolo Subdistrict, Wajo Regency, is located in an area with high seasonal flood risk due to the hydrological influence of Lake Tempe. This study aimed to formulate an adaptive rice farming strategy through the integration of flood vulnerability maps based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), field surveys, cropping calendars, and rice variety recommendations. The research population comprised all active rice farmers, with a sample of 61 farmers selected purposively based on flood vulnerability zoning. A descriptive–analytical approach was applied using weighted overlay spatial analysis of topography, land use, proximity to water bodies, and rainfall, validated through field observations and actual flood event data. The results indicated that 48.5% of paddy fields fall into very high flood vulnerability categories, predominantly located in lowland areas near Lake Tempe. The integration of GIS-based flood maps with cropping calendars and adaptive varieties enhances the accuracy of cultivation decision-making under flood risk conditions.
